Bowman, Sir William
(20 jul. 1816, Nantwich, Cheshire, Inglaterra–29 mar. 1892, cerca de Dorking, Surrey).

Cirujano e histólogo inglés. Sus estudios de los tejidos de los órganos con su profesor Robert Todd condujeron a importantes publicaciones sobre la estructura y función de los músculos voluntarios y los riñones, y a una detallada anatomía del hígado. En los riñones descubrió que la cápsula (cápsula de Bowman) que rodea a cada glomérulo (ovillo de capilares) en los nefrones es continua con los túbulos renales. Esto era de primera importancia para su teoría de la formación de la orina por filtración y clave para comprender la función renal. Bowman y Todd publicaron The Physiological Anatomy and Physiology of Man [Anatomía fisiológica y fisiología humana] (2 vol., 1845–56), trabajo pionero en fisiología e histología. Posteriormente, Bowman se dedicó al estudio de la visión y pasó a ser uno de los científicos más destacados en investigación oftalmológica, un notable cirujano ocular y el primero en describir varias estructuras del ojo y sus funciones.
